I want to learn how to draw! Where should I start?
There are lots of ways! In my experience, Drawing on the Right Side of the Brain by Betty Edwards had some great exercises for learning how to see and draw. Aside from that, I recommend starting with a subject that you're excited about. Portraits of your rabbit? Fan art of your favorite movie? Still-life drawings of your go-to comfort good?
Can I work with you?
I always welcome new project ideas. You can contact me through this page.
What tools/software do you use?
In my process, everything starts with paper. I'm partial to Blick drawing & sketching paper, but in the early days I just drew on printer paper.
For digital art, I use Procreate and/or Photoshop on my iPad.
For vector graphics (e.g., logos), I use Adobe Illustrator and/or Affinity Designer.
How did you get into science?
Growing up, I was always encouraged to stay curious about the mysteries of the natural world. Oh, and I watched many episodes of The Magic School Bus. Later in life I had some great mentors who fueled my interest in biology.
How did you get into art?
Like many people, I drew a lot as a kid (pictures of characters from books, comics about dogs, my own version of Pokemon...), but I did less and less as time went on. Luckily, I reconnected with art as an adult. The main reason was that I started playing video games and found myself thinking, "This is cool, but what if..." I began to draw my own characters and scenes, and discovered that learning to draw was a huge source of joy.
